Meet the Judges
Judge Travis Reeds
Chief Judge of the 52-1 District Court. Judge Reeds brings an extensive background as a defense attorney, following in the footsteps of his father, who was also a well-known defense attorney. He is a reasonable judge who works to balance the interests of the defendant with those of the public. His courtroom is largely managed through his law clerk, Larry Fox.
Judge Robert Bondy
Judge Bondy is the longest tenured judge in the court. He places a strong emphasis on personal responsibility and proactive rehabilitation when appropriate. He is a strong supporter of treatment courts.
In criminal matters, he carefully evaluates sentencing factors and bond compliance history. While he does not typically impose jail, he will do so if he believes a defendant has been dishonest. He is also one of the few judges who may require an ignition interlock device as a condition of probation, even if it is not required by the Secretary of State.
Preparation and early strategic positioning are particularly important in his courtroom. His court is managed through his law clerk, Julie Josselyn.
Judge David Law
Judge Law is widely regarded as a fair and thoughtful judge. Prior to taking the bench, he had a drunk driving charge that was later pardoned by the governor. This background contributes to a level of understanding and perspective in his courtroom.
He is sympathetic to those appearing before him, while also taking his responsibility to the public seriously. He is balanced in his approach and carefully considers the circumstances of each case.
Who Prosecutes Cases in This Court?
Many criminal matters in the 52-1 District Court are prosecuted by the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office. However, the court covers multiple municipalities, and some cases are handled by city or township attorneys.
- Prosecutors are typically assigned to specific judges
- Dismissals and significant charge reductions generally require supervisory approval
- The Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office often takes a firm stance in criminal matters
- Certain ordinance violations may be handled by municipal attorneys within the court’s jurisdiction
In some cases, city or township attorneys may have more flexibility in resolving matters than the county prosecutor.
Arraignments: Your First Court Date
In many misdemeanor cases, the arraignment can be waived. This means:
- You may not need to appear in person
- Paperwork is handled by your attorney
- Bond conditions are issued administratively
- Waivers are common in OWI 1st and many non-assaultive matters
Common bond conditions include:
- No alcohol or illegal drugs
- No new criminal offenses
- Travel restrictions without prior approval
- Alcohol and drug testing in OWI cases
Certain cases require an in person arraignment. These include assaultive offenses, domestic violence allegations, felony matters, weapon charges, and cases involving protective orders. These situations may involve no contact orders, GPS monitoring, structured supervision, or a cash bond requirement.
Even when an arraignment is required, bond conditions are typically set early, and you may be required to appear within a few days of the case being filed to acknowledge those conditions.
Pretrial Conferences: Building Your Defense
After the arraignment or waiver, the court schedules a pretrial conference.
In many misdemeanor matters, your appearance may be allowed via Zoom if you are located outside of the court’s jurisdiction.
Your attorney meets directly with the assigned prosecutor to:
- Review and analyze the evidence
- Ensure all evidence has been received or properly requested
- Identify constitutional and evidentiary issues
- Address potential motions
- Begin strategic negotiations
Most cases are then scheduled for additional pretrial or settlement conferences within the following weeks.
Settlement Conferences: A Critical Decision Point
Settlement conferences often determine the direction of your case.
If an agreement is reached:
- A plea is entered and a sentencing date is scheduled
- A probation interview is typically required prior to sentencing
- In certain OWI cases, same day plea and sentencing may be permitted if evaluations are completed in advance
If no agreement is reached:
- The case proceeds toward evidentiary hearings, motions, or trial
Specialty Treatment Courts
The 52-1 District Court operates several specialty programs, including sobriety court, mental health court, and veterans treatment court.
- Admission criteria apply and not every defendant qualifies
- You must be a resident of the court’s jurisdiction
- These programs require intensive testing, treatment, and regular court reviews
- Successful completion may offer meaningful long term benefits
